What a gas engineer does
Gas engineers install, repair and service boilers, gas hobs, cookers and fires, and issue the gas safety record a landlord needs each year. By law anyone working on gas in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register, so before anyone in Thornton Heath touches your boiler, ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the number on the register.

Frequently asked questions
My boiler has stopped and there is no heating or hot water. What should I check first?
Check the boiler has power and the pressure gauge reads roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when cold, and that the thermostat and timer are calling for heat. In freezing weather a blocked condensate pipe (the plastic pipe running outside) is a common cause; the manufacturer guide explains how to thaw it. If you smell gas, leave the property and call 0800 111 999.
How do I check someone is Gas Safe registered?
Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card, which shows a licence number and the types of work they are qualified for, and check the number on the Gas Safe Register website. A business being registered is not the same as the individual engineer being qualified for boilers.
My boiler is showing an error code. Is it an emergency?
If you can smell gas, leave the property, do not use light switches, and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. An error code with no smell is usually a fault rather than a danger, and the boiler will normally have shut itself down safely. Note the code before you request a quote.
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Manufacturers ask for an annual service to keep the warranty valid, and landlords must have a gas safety check every 12 months. A service checks the burner, flue and safety devices; it is not the same as a landlord safety record, so ask which you are getting.
How do I get a quote from gas engineers in Thornton Heath?
Pick a listing on this page and send a quote request saying what needs doing and when suits you. The business comes back to you with a price and a time. It is free to ask, and no payment is taken online.
Are the gas engineers on this page vetted?
Not yet. Listings marked Claimed have been claimed by the business and are kept up to date by them; the rest come from public records such as Companies House and Google and are marked as not yet claimed. Every listing shows its real Google rating and review count where one exists. We do not check registers or insurance yet, so ask for a Gas Safe or NICEIC/NAPIT number and check it yourself.
What should I check before I hire a gas engineer?
Ask for a written quote and what it includes, who will do the work, whether they are insured, and any registration the trade needs, such as Gas Safe for gas work or a Part P scheme for electrics. Never pay the full amount up front.
Prices and availability are confirmed by each business. No payment is taken online, you pay the tradesperson directly.
