What a driveway and paving contractor does
Driveway and paving contractors lay block paving, resin bound, tarmac, gravel and concrete drives, patios and paths, and repair sunken or weed filled areas. A driveway is only as good as the sub base under it, so in St Albans ask how deep they dig out, what the base is made of and how water will drain away, because the surface you see is the cheap part.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
In England a new or replacement driveway at the front of a house needs permission unless it is permeable or drains to a lawn or border rather than the road. Dropping the kerb needs separate approval from the council.
How long before I can park on it?
It varies with the material: tarmac and block paving are usually usable within a day or two, resin needs longer to cure, and concrete longest of all. The contractor will tell you, and ignoring it leaves marks that do not come out.
What causes a driveway to sink?
A sub base that was too shallow, not compacted, or laid on soft ground. Good contractors dig out to a set depth, lay and compact hardcore in layers, and use edge restraints. Ask to see this on the quote.
How do I get a quote from driveway and paving contractors in St Albans?
Pick a listing on this page and send a quote request saying what needs doing and when suits you. The business comes back to you with a price and a time. It is free to ask, and no payment is taken online.
Are the driveway and paving contractors on this page vetted?
Not yet. Listings marked Claimed have been claimed by the business and are kept up to date by them; the rest come from public records such as Companies House and Google and are marked as not yet claimed. Every listing shows its real Google rating and review count where one exists. We do not check registers or insurance yet, so ask for a Gas Safe or NICEIC/NAPIT number and check it yourself.
What should I check before I hire a driveway and paving contractor?
Ask for a written quote and what it includes, who will do the work, whether they are insured, and any registration the trade needs, such as Gas Safe for gas work or a Part P scheme for electrics. Never pay the full amount up front.
Prices and availability are confirmed by each business. No payment is taken online, you pay the tradesperson directly.
